Renaissance

A club night that became a compilation series that became a canon.

The short answer — what is Renaissance?

Renaissance began in 1992 as Geoff Oakes' club night in Mansfield and grew into one of the most influential compilation and label brands in British dance music. Its 1994 Renaissance: The Mix Collection, mixed by Sasha and John Digweed, effectively invented the modern DJ mix compilation as an artistic format.

Founded 1992 in Mansfield by Geoff Oakes.

The history

How Renaissance shaped the era

Renaissance's club identity — baroque imagery, dress codes, a deliberate rejection of rave aesthetics — set it apart from the warehouse scene it emerged from, and that sense of curation carried directly into the recorded output.

The Mix Collection is the pivotal release. Before it, mix compilations were largely functional track collections; Sasha and Digweed treated the triple-CD set as a composed arc, and the result made both DJs into international names and established progressive house and trance as a listening format rather than only a club one.

The label arm has continued releasing, and the Renaissance brand still tours. Its historical importance lies less in individual twelve-inches than in proving that a DJ mix could be a body of work.
