The Imprints

Classic trance record labels and the catalogues they built.

Before streaming, a label was the filter. Buyers trusted an imprint more than they trusted an artist name, DJs bought whole catalogues unheard, and the sound of a scene was decided by a handful of A&R desks in Frankfurt, London, Antwerp and Amsterdam. This directory profiles the record labels that made classic trance — who founded them, what they sounded like, and which anthems came out of them.

The short answer — which labels defined classic trance?

The labels that shaped classic trance include Eye Q and MFS in Germany (1990–91), Hooj Choons, Perfecto and Platipus in the UK, Bonzai in Belgium, and the Dutch artist-owned imprints Tsunami, Black Hole and later Armada. Anjunabeats, founded in 2000, carried the sound past the commercial peak.
