Deconstruction Records

Major-label money behind club records — including 'Xpander'.

The short answer — what is Deconstruction Records?

Deconstruction Records was the British dance label founded in 1987 by Pete Hadfield and Keith Blackhurst and distributed through BMG. It gave club music major-label resources at exactly the right moment, releasing Sasha's 'Xpander' EP (1999) and handling the UK release of Robert Miles' 'Children' — two of the most-played records of the classic era.

The history

How Deconstruction Records shaped the era

Deconstruction's model was unusual: independent A&R instincts, major-label distribution and marketing. That combination let it press and promote club records at a scale the specialist imprints could not match, and it is why its catalogue contains both underground twelve-inches and outright chart records.

Sasha's 'Xpander' is the label's defining trance moment. Released in 1999 at the peak of the progressive-trance crossover, it is a record with almost no conventional hook — a rising, endlessly modulating pad figure — that nonetheless reached the UK top twenty and remains the most-cited progressive trance record ever made.

The label wound down in the early 2000s as BMG restructured, but its run from 1987 to 2002 tracks the entire arc of British dance music from acid house through superclub trance.
