Bonzai Records
“The Belgian engine room of hard, driving, unapologetic trance.”
The short answer — what is Bonzai Records?
Bonzai Records is the Belgian label founded in Antwerp in 1992. It became the centre of the hard-edged Belgian trance sound of the late 1990s — faster, more percussive and less concerned with crossover than its British counterparts — and released Push's 'Universal Nation' (1998), one of the era's most enduring uplifting anthems.
Founded 1992 in Antwerp by Marcel Achten and Piet Bervoets · Sublabels: Bonzai Trance Progressive, Bonzai Classics.
How Bonzai Records shaped the era
Belgium had been a dance-music power since new beat in the late 1980s, and Bonzai inherited that infrastructure: local studios, local pressing, a domestic club circuit that wanted records harder and faster than London did. The result was a house sound with more drive and less polish than the UK melodic school.
The roster was built around a small group of prolific producers working under many aliases — M.I.K.E. Dierickx as Push, Yves Deruyter, Airwave, Jones & Stephenson — which let the label sustain an enormous release schedule while keeping a consistent identity. 'Universal Nation' remains the reference point: a single riff, held far longer than it should be, over relentless drums.
Bonzai has continued operating through multiple sublabels and reissue campaigns, and its classic catalogue is now a regular source for the harder end of contemporary trance revival sets.
