Context

Producers vs DJs in the classic era.

Trance’s biggest records did not always come from its biggest DJs. Binary Finary’s ‘1998’ became a classic largely through Paul van Dyk’s remix, and Delerium’s ‘Silence’ through Tiësto’s In Search Of Sunrise remix. Remixing was often where a producer’s name was made.

Frequently asked

Who are the most famous trance producers?

The classic era’s most influential trance producers include Paul van Dyk, Ferry Corsten, BT, ATB, Robert Miles, Chicane, Jam & Spoon, Energy 52 and Tiësto. What is the difference between a trance DJ and a trance producer?

A producer writes and records tracks in the studio. A DJ plays and mixes records for an audience. Many classic-era names did both, but some of the biggest records came from producers who rarely DJ’d, and some famous DJs released few records of their own.

What equipment did classic trance producers use?

Hardware synths and samplers were standard. Roland’s JP-8000 and its Super Saw oscillator became closely linked with the late-1990s trance lead sound.
