Eye Q Records
“Frankfurt, 1991 — where trance stopped being a rumour.”
The short answer — what is Eye Q Records?
Eye Q Records was the Frankfurt label founded in 1991 by Sven Väth with Matthias Hoffmann and Heinz Roth. Alongside its harder sister imprint Harthouse, it is where the German origins of trance were formalised: Dance 2 Trance, Barbarella and Väth's own productions established the hypnotic, arpeggio-driven template the rest of the genre inherited.

How Eye Q Records shaped the era
Frankfurt in the early 1990s had the Omen club, a dense studio scene and a set of producers coming out of acid house and EBM looking for something more hypnotic. Eye Q gave that scene a catalogue number. The records are slower and stranger than what trance became — closer to techno with melody than to the arena sound of 1999 — but every structural idea is already present.
Harthouse, launched in 1992, took the harder and more acid-driven material: Hardfloor's 'Acperience', Resistance D, Spicelab. Splitting the two allowed Eye Q to develop the melodic, atmospheric wing without diluting either identity — a template later labels copied repeatedly.
The operation collapsed in 1997 after its distribution partner failed, and Väth moved on to found Cocoon. Eye Q's six-year run nonetheless produced the founding documents of the genre, and the catalogue has been steadily reissued since.
