MFS
“Masterminded For Success — the Berlin label that launched Paul van Dyk.”
The short answer — what is MFS?
MFS (Masterminded For Success) is the Berlin label founded in 1990 by British expatriate Mark Reeder. It released the earliest records by Paul van Dyk and Cosmic Baby, and issued the original 1993 pressing of Energy 52's 'Café Del Mar' — making it the single most consequential trance label of post-reunification Berlin.
Founded 1990 in Berlin by Mark Reeder.
How MFS shaped the era
Reeder had lived in West Berlin since the late 1970s, and MFS was built in the specific window after the Wall came down when the city's empty buildings became clubs and its electronic scene reorganised itself almost overnight. The label's early catalogue is documentary evidence of that moment.
Its most important signing was a young Paul van Dyk, whose remix work and early singles for MFS established the bright, melodic, emotionally direct style that would become his signature. Cosmic Baby, Effective Force and Paul Browse fill out a roster that was more experimental than the later trance mainstream.
Energy 52's 'Café Del Mar' came out on MFS in 1993 as a slow, dubby Balearic instrumental and sold modestly. Four years later Hooj Choons licensed it into the UK with the Three 'N One remix and it became an anthem — a reminder that MFS was consistently four years early.
