Positiva Records

Positiva was built to solve a specific problem: British clubs were breaking European dance records months before any UK label owned the rights. EMI's answer was a dedicated imprint with the licensing budget and radio relationships to convert club demand into chart positions quickly.

For trance specifically, that made Positiva one of the most important gatekeepers of the era. Binary Finary's '1998' had been an underground record until the Paul van Dyk remix and a Positiva release put it in front of a mainstream audience — the same pattern the label repeated across dozens of releases.

The consequence was double-edged. Positiva's success is a large part of why trance reached daytime radio at all, and also part of why the backlash arrived: by 2001 the imprint's release schedule was a reasonable proxy for what critics meant when they complained trance had become a pop format.
