Perfecto Records
“Oakenfold's imprint, and the bridge from Balearic house to arena trance.”
The short answer — what is Perfecto Records?
Perfecto Records is the London label founded in 1989 by Paul Oakenfold and Steve Osborne. It began as an outlet for the pair's Balearic and indie-dance remix work and became, through the 1990s, one of the defining homes of British trance — releasing Grace, BT and Man With No Name, and giving Oakenfold the platform that made him the era's most visible DJ.

How Perfecto Records shaped the era
Perfecto's first identity was not trance at all. Oakenfold and Osborne were the remix team behind Happy Mondays and U2 records, and the early Perfecto catalogue reflects that: Balearic house, indie crossover, and the loose, sun-bleached sound Oakenfold had brought back from Ibiza in 1987. The label's turn toward trance happened gradually, tracking what its owner was actually playing.
By the mid-1990s the shift was complete. Grace's 'Not Over Yet' (1995), rebuilt by the Perfecto Allstarz, gave the label a vocal anthem; BT's 'Flaming June' (1997) gave it the melodic, layered progressive sound that would define its peak years. The Perfecto Fluoro sublabel, launched in 1996, handled the harder psychedelic end — Man With No Name, Space Manoeuvres — keeping the main imprint free for the melodic material.
Perfecto's real leverage was distribution and visibility rather than volume. Oakenfold's residencies, his Essential Mix broadcasts and the Perfecto compilation series meant a record signed to the label was heard by an audience no independent trance imprint could otherwise reach. The label has changed distribution partners repeatedly since 2000 but has never fully stopped releasing.
What a Perfecto Records record sounds like
- Melodic, song-shaped trance with crossover ambitions
- Big-room breakdowns built for Oakenfold's own sets
- A harder psychedelic wing quarantined on Perfecto Fluoro
