A handful of synthesisers did a disproportionate amount of the work in classic trance: the Roland JP-8000 for the supersaw, the Access Virus for pads and leads, the Nord Lead for plucks and stabs, and the Roland TB-303 for the acid lines the genre inherited from its Frankfurt origins.

These essays go instrument by instrument — what each machine was designed to do, what producers actually used it for, and how a single oscillator mode on one 1996 Roland ended up defining the sound of a genre.

Four machines dominate the era. The Roland JP-8000 (1996) supplied the Super Saw, seven detuned sawtooth oscillators on one voice, which became the default trance lead within two years of release. The Access Virus, from 1997 onwards, handled pads, hoovers and the thicker leads that needed more filter character. The Clavia Nord Lead covered plucks, stabs and short percussive leads. And the Roland TB-303 supplied the acid line that trance inherited from its Frankfurt and Goa ancestry rather than invented.

What unites them is that each was a hardware instrument with a fixed, immediately recognisable character, played by producers who knew that character intimately. Software emulations now reproduce the waveforms accurately, but the era's records also carry the artefacts of the surrounding chain: outboard reverb units, hardware mixing desks, DAT mastering and vinyl cutting. Recreating the palette is straightforward; recreating the whole signal path is what separates a convincing homage from a plugin preset.
