1999 · Free For All

Rank 1 — Airwave

"Rank 1’s instrumental breakthrough, before the vocal redevelopment."

The Story

Why this record matters

Airwave is the instrumental record closely associated with Rank 1’s breakthrough. The original Free For All pressing transcription dates to 1999 and credits Piet Bervoets and Benno de Goeij. For this archive it represents the melodic side of late-1990s Dutch trance. Its later vocal and remix history is worth following, but those releases should not replace the original instrumental as the reference.

Origins

How it came to exist

Benno de Goeij’s own biography says he met Piet Bervoets in 1997 and identifies Airwave and the Rank 1 remix of Cygnus X’s Superstring among their breakthroughs. The original Airwave pressing is cataloged in 1999; a separately checked Free For All CD is from 2000. That CD year does not prove the composition first appeared in 2000. The original pressing evidence here is a community transcription, not a newly inspected label archive.

Production

How it was built

The original catalog credits both Bervoets and de Goeij as writers, producers and composers. The named Rank1 vs. Dutch Force Remix is a separate version on the same pressing. De Goeij’s biography identifies Dutch Force among his projects, so it should not be read as a third member of Rank 1. No complete equipment list, fixed BPM or time-stamped arrangement claims are asserted here.

Reception

What happened when it landed

The member biography and historical artist account both frame Airwave as a breakthrough. Different catalog editions show its movement from the Dutch original into later release campaigns. Calling it a signature record is safer than calling it Rank 1’s first release: the same catalog also contains Black Snow / The Citrus Juicer from 1999. This guide does not infer an undocumented ranking or debut order.

Legacy

What it changed

Breathing (Airwave) is documented as a 2003 ID&T release with club, full-vocal and breaks variants. The 21st Century Mix is a 2014 redevelopment, and Giuseppe Ottaviani’s own dated announcement identifies a 2023 High Contrast remix. These are separate chapters: vocals and production choices on the later releases should not be attributed to the original 1999 instrumental.
